2010 Interfaith Calender Competition Launch

The Hampshire Interfaith Network supported by Hampshire County Council and NASCRE is for the second year running a competition for schools to participate in designing an interfaith calendar for 2010. The 2009 calender received an overwhelming 400 entries but not only had received local interest in Hampshire but also received interest from other regional and national bodies.

The aim is to encourage young people in Hampshire, including Southampton and Portsmouth, to produce a poem, drawing, painting, photograph, picture or a mixture of these to represent a significant religious event for a given month of the calendar year; either as a group or individually. The concept is for a young person to work with someone older with at least a generational gap. This could include for example a grandparent. We want to encourage intergenerational relationships between young people and older people. As examples, for the month of December, entries may consist of elements to do with Christmas or Hanukah, perhaps entries for April could relate to Vaisakhi or Ridvan. There are 9 faiths that belong to the Hampshire Interfaith Network, these are Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Baha’i, Jain and Zoroastrian. For some interfaith inspiration the BBC website may prove helpful.

The judging panel will aim to include senior members of Children’s Services and the co-Chair of Hampshire Interfaith Network, as well as young people from across Hampshire.

The launch of the calendar will be at the beginning of October and the closing date for competition entries is Friday 17th July 2009. All the winning schools and students will be invited to attend the launch of the calendar and each winning school will be awarded £100, with each winning student (or group) being awarded £30 worth of book tokens. The winning entries will be used in the production and publication of the calendar.
